Course Programmes (ME/M Tech/M Des)
The Institute offers four programmes based on course work: Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Technology (M Tech), Master of Design (M Des) and Master of Management (M Mgt). The Institute admits about 400 students every year for its course programmes. The number includes about 50 sponsored candidates from the Defence Services, Defence Research and Development Organization, Indian Space Research Organization, BARC, NAL, CPRI, KSRTC, BMTC, PWD and BDA, faculty members from engineering colleges under the Quality Improvement Programmes.
The following categories of candidates are eligible to apply for admission to course programmes.
(a) Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology or its equivalent.
(b) Bachelor’s degree holders in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Science/ Electronics followed by qualifications obtained through an examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE.
(c) Bachelor’s degree holders in Architecture/Design (for M Des programme only)
(d) Master’s degree holders in Science disciplines including Physics with Electronics/ Instrumentation/Geology/ Computer Application/ Physical Sciences/ Mathematical Sciences as applicable to individual department offering M Tech programmes.
All the candidates should qualify in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2013 or 2014) for ME / M Tech, GATE or in the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED 2013 or 2014) for M Des, and GATE 2013/2014 or CAT 2013/GMAT 2013 for M.Mgt, and possess the valid score card(s) as on 1st August 2014.
(a) The minimum requirement for admission to course programmes-ME/M Tech/M Des is a SECOND CLASS and for M.Mgt a FIRST CLASS (as declared by the University) or an equivalent grade in the qualifying examination as indicated against each department.
(b) Candidates with B Sc followed by a professional Diploma, should have studied their B Sc in the 10+2+3 system and obtained at least a SECOND CLASS.
(c) Wherever Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology is prescribed, the minimum eligible qualification for admission, the duration of the such degree courses should be atleast 4 years and wherever Master’s degree is prescribed the minimum duration should be of 2 years, in addition to the 10+2 (i.e. 10th Std and 12th Std). However the candidates who have studied diploma and got exemption of 1 year in the Engineering/Technology are also eligible to apply.
(d) The minimum requirement of a SECOND CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS forSC/ST candidates.
(e) Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they should have completed all the requirements for the award of their qualifying degree, including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining, i.e., by the end of July 2014.
(f) Candidates who join initially for the ME / M Tech programmes may be permitted to transfer to the Ph D programme, subject to academic assessments.
The participating departments/centres, disciplines, minimum qualifications, areas of study are listed in the table given below. Candidates can choose to apply for up to a maximum of 5 disciplines from ME/ M Tech and M Des programmes.

Selection is based on the GATE score only.
Tie Breaking: In the case of candidates with equal GATE score, their performance in the qualifying examination would be used to resolve the tie.
M Tech Programmes
(a) Electronic Systems Engineering: After screening based on the GATE score, an aptitude test and interview will be conducted during 21 and 23 April 2014. Selection will be based on performance in the aptitude test and interview.
(b) Computational Science: After screening based on the GATE score, an aptitude test and interview will be conducted during 21 and 23 April 2014. Selection will be based on performance in the aptitude test and interview.
(c) Climate Science: After screening based on the GATE score, an aptitude test and interview will be conducted during 21 and 23 April 2014. Selection will be based on performance in the aptitude test and interview.
(d) Instrumentation: Selection is based on the GATE score only.
(e) Transportation and Infrastructure Engineering: Selection is based on the GATE score only.
(f) Earth Sciences: After screening based on the GATE score, an aptitude test and interview will be conducted during 21 and 23 April 2014. Selection will be based on performance in the aptitude test and interview.
(g) Nano Science and Engineering: After screening based on the GATE score, interview will be conducted during 21 and 23 April 2014. Selection will be based on performance in interview.
M Des Programme
After screening based on GATE / CEED score, a design aptitude test and interview will be conducted at the Institute, between 24 and 25 April 2014. Selection will be based on performance in the design aptitude test and interview.
(a) Candidates short-listed for the aptitude test/group discussion and interview will be posted on IISc websitewww.iisc.ernet.in/admissions at least 2 weeks in advance Such candidates can take a print-out of the interview letters from the respective candidate’s LOGIN page and make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post.
(b) Candidates called for the aptitude test/group discussion and interview have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation etc.
(c) Candidates called for the aptitude test/group discussion and interview should bring with them attested copies of all their transcripts (marks cards from SSLC or equivalent onwards, degree certificate of the qualifying examination, etc.) and produce them before the interview committee, failing which, they will not be interviewed.
(d) Candidates belonging to the SC/ST category should bring the original caste/tribe certificate, issued by a competent authority for purposes of verification. OBC candidates belonging to non creamy layer/minorities (as listed in the Central list) will be required to produce the original certificate issued on or after January 1st2014 by a competent authority.
(e) Candidates belonging to the Physically Handicapped category and Kashmiri-Migrants should produce the original of the appropriate certificates, issued as per Government of India rules.
(f) The offer letter for the selected candidates will be posted on IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/admissionsduring the third week of June. They can download the offer letter and make necessary arrangements including payment of fees etc. No separate communication will be sent by post.
(g) Candidates admitted to ME, M Tech, M Des programmes should report to the Institute for completing admission formalities on 29.07.2014. The session commences on 01.08.2014.
(h) At the time of joining, candidates should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc.
(i) Only candidates who produce all the mark sheets and degree certificates (original/provisional) issued by the University Authority will be given regular admission.
(j) Candidates who are awaiting results but have completed all formalities for the award of a degree should produce at the time of joining, a Course-Completion Certificate, issued by the Head of the institution (The Principal/Registrar). Such candidates will be given only provisional admission, which will be regularized on their producing all the marks sheets and degree certificates (original, or provisional)etc., issued by the University Authority on or before 31 October 2014, failing which, the provisional admission stands cancelled.
(k) Candidates who are given provisional admission are eligible for a scholarship only on regularization of admission (on production of the required documents). They will be paid a scholarship with retrospective effect, i.e., from the date of joining.
