 Gate 2014 Detail

For the readers who does not know what is GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) – let me tell you that this is an entrance exam primarily meant for admissions in Post-Graduation courses (i.e. M.E, M. Tech, Ph. D) in not only the eight hallowed IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) in India, but also in more than 300 other renowned engineering colleges in India.

Why I say “primarily”  is because, of late GATE scores are also being used by the blue chip PSUs in India as a recruitment exam – all these PSUs these days do not conduct any written exam by themselves, but shortlists the candidates for interview based on GATE scores of candidates. If you go through my popular article titled: Jobs through GATE 2013 List of PSU Organisation recruiting  you will find that on the last count, there were 13 PSUs which are on the process of recruiting through GATE – the name includes such heavyweights as: IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, GAIL, NTPC, BHEL etc.

As I go through these stories, I can find there are two major changes being predicted for GATE 2014:

1.0 GATE 2014: all exam papers to be Online.

Yes, just as CAT (Common Admission Test) has become online from 2009 onward, GATE exam papers of all the 21 streams are likely to be held online from GATE 2014 onward.

Till this year (i.e. GATE 2013), only 15 GATE subject papers (AE, AG, AR, BT, CE, CH, CY, GG, PH, MA, MN, MT, TF, XE, and XL) were held online, the  remaining 6 (CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, and PI).) were held offline (pen-paper).

So what has changed in GATE 2014 for the candidates appearing in streams other than the 6 streams (CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, and PI)? None, as the exam was held online in GATE 2013 also!

2.0 GATE 2014: to be held in two stages: Prelims & Mains.

I have also gone through a few stories (none as reliable as above) about proposals to make GATE 2014 a two stage exam – Prelims and Mains. This is being talked about to ease off the huge number of GATE aspirants – around 12 lakh candidates registered for GATE 2013 and among them, 9.84 lakh actually appeared for the exam.

As I get a more clear picture on 2-stage GATE 2014, I would post the update in this blog.

GATE 2014 Exam Date:

Date for GATE 2014 has been planned on six days from 1st February to 9th March, 2014. Each day will have two sessions – morning and afternoon and thus there would be total  12 session. The six dates on which

GATE 2014 would be held are: February: 1,2, 15, 16 and March: 1, 2..

Change of Exam Pattern in GATE 2014?

No, I am not expecting any major change in the exam pattern/structure of GATE 2014 – since already GATE committee would have their hand full because of the transition to all-paper-online challenge, they are least likely to invite any more headache by introducing major changes in the structure/pattern of GATE 2014.

So I expect that each of GATE 2014 subject would continue to consist of a single paper of 3 hours duration, containing 65 questions of total 100 marks – just as the previous years. Only you have to answer these papers online in the venues that would be selected by GATE committee. How will the interface of Online GATE 2014 would look like?

Since the structure of GATE 2014 would not change much, and your fundamentals are tested in GATE, you can go through following blog post of mine to find the prep materials for GATE 2014:
